It happens fast. You shut the door at the Britannia Beach lot, or you're loading groceries at the Merivale Road plaza, and the keys are sitting right there on the driver's seat behind locked glass. Here is exactly what to do, in order, and what you should never try.

Before You Call Anyone: The 60-Second Checklist

Roughly one lockout call in ten gets solved before the truck rolls. Run through this first:

1. Try every door, then the trunk and hatch. Power lock actuators fail one door at a time. The rear passenger door is unlocked more often than you'd think.
2. Check your phone. Most vehicles from roughly 2015 onward have a manufacturer app: FordPass, myChevrolet, Toyota App, MyHyundai, Kia Connect, MyHonda. If your account is active, many will unlock the doors remotely in seconds.

What Not to Try

On most vehicles it takes five to fifteen minutes from the time the truck arrives. Nothing is cut, drilled or forced.

Two honest limits worth knowing. Some newer vehicles with fully flush glass and deadlocking systems are genuinely difficult and occasionally can't be opened this way; a reputable operator will tell you that on the phone rather than after billing you. And if the key is physically lost rather than locked inside, that's an automotive locksmith or dealer job to cut and program a new key, not a lockout.
