Locked Keys in Your Car in Ottawa? Here’s What to Do

August 3, 2026  •  6 min read  •  Ottawa, Ontario

It happens fast. You shut the door at the Britannia Beach lot, or you're loading groceries at the Merivale Road plaza, and the keys are sitting right there on the driver's seat behind locked glass. Lockouts spike in Ottawa every summer: more short stops, more people at parks and beaches, more keys set down while hands are full. Here is exactly what to do, in order, and what you should never try.

Before You Call Anyone: The 60-Second Checklist

Roughly one lockout call in ten gets solved before the truck rolls. Run through this first:

  1. Try every door, then the trunk and hatch. Power lock actuators fail one door at a time. The rear passenger door is unlocked more often than you'd think.
  2. Check your phone. Most vehicles from roughly 2015 onward have a manufacturer app: FordPass, myChevrolet, Toyota App, MyHyundai, Kia Connect, MyHonda. If your account is active, many will unlock the doors remotely in seconds.
  3. Find out where the spare is. A partner, roommate or parent bringing the spare from Barrhaven is often faster and cheaper than any service call.
  4. Is the car running? Some vehicles lock with the engine on. That's not just an inconvenience. It's burning fuel, and it moves the job up the priority list.

Stop and call 911 first if: a child or a pet is locked inside. On a 30°C Ottawa afternoon a closed car can pass 50°C in about 20 minutes, and it climbs fastest in the first 10. Do not wait for a locksmith or a tow truck. Ottawa Police and Ottawa Fire Services will force entry and treat it as an emergency. A broken window is nothing next to the alternative.

What Not to Try

Most of the damage we see on lockout calls was done by the driver, or by a well-meaning bystander, in the ten minutes before we arrived:

How a Professional Unlock Actually Works

There's no drama to it, which is the point. A technician wedges an inflatable air bladder into the top corner of the door frame to create a few millimetres of gap, not enough to bend anything, then feeds a coated long-reach tool through to press the unlock button or pull the interior handle. On most vehicles it takes five to fifteen minutes from the time the truck arrives. Nothing is cut, drilled or forced.

Two honest limits worth knowing. Some newer vehicles with fully flush glass and deadlocking systems are genuinely difficult and occasionally can't be opened this way; a reputable operator will tell you that on the phone rather than after billing you. And if the key is physically lost rather than locked inside, that's an automotive locksmith or dealer job to cut and program a new key, not a lockout. In that case a tow to your dealer is usually the cheaper route.

What It Costs in Ottawa

A standard mobile unlock in Ottawa generally lands around $60 to $120, depending on the vehicle, the hour, and how far the truck travels. A call to Stittsville or Cumberland costs more than one downtown. Overnight and holiday rates run higher. A few things that save people real money:

Making Sure It Doesn't Happen Again

Every operator in this city has regulars who call two or three times a year. The fixes are boring and they work:
